The Oklahoma State Department of Health reported on Friday evening a record 301 Oklahomans were in intensive care unit beds because of COVID-19.

The previous record for ICU patients was 293, set Wednesday.

According to the latest executive order report, 289 ICU patients had confirmed cases of COVID-19, while another 12 were suspected of having the illness.

As of Friday evening, a total of 792 Oklahomans were hospitalized. Of those, 722 had positive coronavirus tests. Tulsa County had 222 residents hospitalized, up 21 from Thursday.

Health officials are warning the state's hospital systems are coming under strain under ongoing, high levels of hospitalizations.

Over the course of the pandemic, 7,679 Oklahomans have been hospitalized for COVID-19. The average hospital patient is nearly 61 years old.
