Back in 1938, the legendary local oilman Waite Phillips announced that he was giving his Italianate mansion --- and its surrounding 20-plus acres of uniformly gorgeous grounds --- to the citizens of Tulsa as an art museum and park space. Today, as has been the case all along, the Philbrook Museum of Art is an important and truly unique aspect of the art scene not just in our community but throughout this part of the nation. Now comes a special exhibit that reflects on Philbrook's remarkable legacy --- as an art museum as well as cultural fixture in the City of Tulsa --- while also looking toward the future. "Collective Future: Gifts in Honor of Philbrook's 75th Anniversary" opened yesterday (the 3rd) and will be on view through January 26th, 2014. As we read on the museum's website about this show: "While acknowledging the collection's most significant foundations, the emphasis of this anniversary exhibition is upon a group of recent donations to the Philbrook permanent collection from an entirely new generation of collectors."
