Today we welcome Dr. Lewis H. Ziska to StudioTulsa. He's a research plant physiologist who works for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agriculture Research Service, where he specializes in crop systems and global change. Dr. Ziska has devoted much of his career to researching how climate change and rising levels of carbon dioxide affect plants and aerobiology as well as the roles they play in agriculture and public health. He'll deliver the Paul Buck Memorial Lecture tonight (Thursday the 10th) at 7pm in Helmerich Hall on the University of Tulsa campus; this free-to-the-public address is presented annually by TU's Biological Science Department, and Dr. Ziska's talk will specifically concern "Climate, CO2, and Plant Biology: Exploring the Links to Public Health." On this edition of ST, he discusses --- among other topics --- why pollen allergens such as ragweed are thriving amid our planet's increasingly warmer weather...and why higher levels of CO2 increase allergens, which in turn extend the allergy season. (You can learn more about his lecture at TU tonight here.)
