Oklahoma’s state prisons are overcrowded, dilapidated, and understaffed. Women in Oklahoma are incarcerated at twice the national rate. Two state questions aimed at sentencing reform passed in 2016, but they left major areas unaddressed.
Join us for The Give & Take on Sentencing Reform Thursday, February 22nd from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Tyrrell Hall Auditorium on The University of Tulsa campus. Our panel, moderated by Public Radio Tulsa News Director John Durkee, will unpack the issue, look at Oklahoma’s criminal justice history, and explore what could work to fix our broken sentencing system. The panelists are Ryan Gentzler, Policy Analyst, Oklahoma Policy Institute; Tammy Westcott, Incarceration Reduction division director and Tulsa County COURTS program manager, Community Service Council; and Kris Steele, Executive Director, The Education and Employment Ministry and former Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
