Sac and Fox Launch Campaign for Return of Jim Thorpe

Wikipedia

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The principal chief of the Sac and Fox Nation has launched a campaign aimed at moving the remains of Jim Thorpe from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma.

Chief George Thurman announced the "Bring Jim Thorpe Home" campaign Wednesday in Oklahoma City, saying Thorpe wanted to be buried in his native Oklahoma. The announcement comes a day after Thorpe's sons asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene.

Thorpe, a famous Olympian a century ago, died in 1953. His third wife agreed to bury him in a Pennsylvania town that renamed itself after the athlete.

Courts have differed on whether his remains should be returned to the Sac and Fox Nation under a 1990 repatriation law. The borough of Jim Thorpe says Thorpe's wife had the right to decide where to bury her husband.
