TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Tulsa County has paid nearly $34,000 for an indicted former sheriff's unsuccessful legal fight against a grand jury petition that sought an investigation into his agency.
The Tulsa World reports additional expenses could push the amount higher.
County commissioners allowed former Sheriff Stanley Glanz to hire a law firm to fight the petition signed by thousands of residents seeking a grand jury investigation of his office after a reserve deputy fatally shot an unarmed man in April.
The former volunteer deputy, Robert Bates, is charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of Eric Harris. Bates has pleaded not guilty.
After the shooting, an attorney for Harris' family released an internal 2009 memo that alleged sheriff's officials knew Bates was inadequately trained, but pressured subordinates to look the other way.
