A state financial audit of Tulsa County has revealed that nearly $200,000 in Tulsa jail inmate funds are apparently unaccounted for and are suspected to be missing.
The Tulsa World reported yesterday that the State Auditor and Inspector's Office fiscal year 2015 audit of Tulsa County government noted that county personnel suspect about $188,877 in funds are missing. The account holds inmates' funds for them to use on commissary items or phone card purchases.
The audit also showed that a sheriff's office employee wasn't removed from payroll for 11 months after termination, resulting in the former employee receiving more than $36,000 in compensation post-employment.
The county clerk's office says a "breakdown of bookkeeping at the jail" led to the excess compensation.
