Oklahoma Veterans Affairs Closes Labs at Ardmore, Sulphur

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs is closing laboratories at its Ardmore and Sulphur veterans centers to cut costs.

Officials say the laboratories will close effective Tuesday. Three full-time jobs will be affected but the agency will save about $300,000 a year.

Radiology departments at the Ardmore and Sulphur centers and laboratories at five other veterans centers across Oklahoma will continue to operate normally. The agency will contract with private labs to meet the needs of the Ardmore and Sulphur centers.

Deputy Director Doug Elliott says the agency is looking for ways to reduce its costs as lawmakers work to overcome a $1.3 billion hole in the state budget for next year. Elliott says the changes will not affect the level of care received by veterans served by the agency.
