MOORELAND, Okla. (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey has recorded two small earthquakes near Mooreland in northwestern Oklahoma.
The USGS reports a 3.3 magnitude quake at 3:35 a.m. yesterday and a 2.9 magnitude temblor about 18 minutes later. The area is about 110 miles northwest of Oklahoma City.
No injury or damage is reported. Geologists say earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 3.0 are generally the smallest that are felt by humans and that damage is not likely in quakes below magnitude 4.0.
Oklahoma's earthquakes have been linked to the injection of wastewater underground by the oil and gas industry and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission earlier this month instructed producers to reduce injection volumes by more than 500,000 barrels a day in a 5,200-square-mile area of northwestern Oklahoma.
