The Oklahoma Department of Health says two Oklahomans have been sickened by the Zika virus while traveling overseas.
State health officials said Thursday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention verified the Zika infections, which are the first laboratory confirmed cases of the virus in Oklahoma.
Officials say the Zika virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito and it's been potentially linked to birth defects. There is no vaccine, preventative medication or specific treatment drug for it.
The disease can cause fever, rash, muscle and joint aches and red eyes. Symptoms typically last several days to a week, and hospitalizations are rare. Most people exposed to the virus won't develop any symptoms.
Transmission of the Zika virus is not currently occurring in the United States.
