Back to Garfield Elementary: The Day the Innocence Died

Recently, Public Radio Tulsa’s Steve Clemtook a handful of classmates back to his grade school, Garfield Elementary in Sand Springs to talk about the seminal event of his childhood, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.   It happened 55 years ago this month.  From the same classroom where Steve and his fellow fourth-graders sat glued to the school’s black-and-white TV, they share their memories of that day and how it changed them.

“That day, over a half century ago, is still extremely vivid in my memory,” says Clem.  “The TV happened to be in our classroom for a French lesson.  It was like time stood still as we watched the events of that day unfold before our 9-year-old eyes.”

“That was a horrific day.  But the documentary is not all doom and gloom.  Hit songs from 1963* add a bit of nostalgia for that more innocent time,” Clem says.
