Our guest on ST is Dr. Stephen Marshak, Professor of Geology and Director of the School of Earth, Society, and Environment at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. As a part of Earth Week, the University of Tulsa's Geosciences Department invited Dr. Marshak for two speaking engagements that occurred here on the TU campus yesterday (the 17th) at noon and 7:30pm. The latter was an address entitled "What's Happening Deep Beneath the Midcontinent?: Tectonics, Earthquakes, and the EarthScope Project in North America's Interior." Dr. Marshak, who's taught structural geology, tectonics, and field geology for three decades --- and who recently became involved with the EarthScope project (which will enable geologists to produce CAT-scan-like images of the Earth's interior, far beneath the surface of the Midcontinent) --- tells us all about his ongoing research efforts as well as current trends and theories related to this research. Thus we also discuss the controversial practice known as "fracking" --- and whether and how this practice is linked with the recent array of earthquakes we've been experiencing here in Oklahoma. (You can learn more about Dr. Marshak's appearance at TU here.)
