On Philanthropy, Both Local and Global: A Discussion with Two Tulsa Experts on Giving with a Purpose

Aired on Wednesday, December 11th.

What motivates a person --- or a business --- to make a philanthropic gift? And are such gifts more common or less common in this country than they were, say, a generation or two ago? What sorts of philanthropic gifts are most popular these days, and why? And how have things like the internet and the global economy changed philanthropic giving? Today on StudioTulsa, we're talking about philanthropy --- and about certain financial, economic, ethical, personal, and philosophical questions related to it --- with two local experts on this topic. One of our guests is Philip S. Haney, a Tulsa-based attorney with 40 years' experience in assisting nonprofits and charitable organizations; Haney specializes in philanthropic law and even teaches classes on philanthropy. Our other guest is Phil Lakin, Jr., the CEO of the Tulsa Community Foundation (TCF); this foundation, per its website, "is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that assists other nonprofits, corporations, individuals, and families with meaningful and efficient charitable giving solutions. As a result of the charitable nature of its corporate and individual donors...TCF [is] the largest community foundation in America, granting millions of dollars from its charitable funds ever year."
