At the Helm of a Local Favorite: A Chat with Edward Durnal, Director of ATC's "A Christmas Carol"

Aired on Thursday, December 11th.

Tonight (Thursday the 11th) at 7:30pm, in the Williams Theatre of the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, American Theatre Company (or ATC) will begin its annual production of "A Christmas Carol." (Several shows are scheduled for this run, which happens through the 23rd; you can see a full schedule of performances here.) It's the 38th consecutive year for ATC to be presenting this locally-created, all-original-music, ever-popular stage adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic -- and to say that this work of musical theatre has become a Tulsa tradition might well be an understatement. Our guest is Edward Durnal, a longtime member of the ATC staff who's directing this play. It's actually his tenth and final turn as the director for this production, and so he chats with us about how the show has grown over the years, and about the history of ATC itself. Also on our program today, we welcome a terrific new commentator to our roster, Janet Pearson, formerly of The Tulsa World. Pearson's first piece for ST concerns "de-cluttering" (or "not de-cluttering," as the case may be).

Rich Fisher passed through KWGS about thirty years ago, and just never left. Today, he is the general manager of Public Radio Tulsa, and the host of KWGS’s public affairs program, StudioTulsa, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in August 2012 . As host of StudioTulsa, Rich has conducted roughly four thousand long-form interviews with local, national, and international figures in the arts, humanities, sciences, and government. Very few interviews have gone smoothly. Despite this, he has been honored for his work by several organizations including the Governor's Arts Award for Media by the State Arts Council, a Harwelden Award from the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, and was named one of the “99 Great Things About Oklahoma” in 2000 by Oklahoma Today magazine.
