Both at Gilcrease: "Looking West: The Rumley Family Collection" and "Creating the Modern Southwest"

Aired on Thursday, March 16th.

On this installment of StudioTulsa, we speak with Laura Fry, the Senior Curator and Curator of Art at the Gilcrease Museum. She tells us about two special exhibitions now on view at the museum: "Looking West: The Rumley Family Collection" (which will close on the 19th, this coming Sunday) and "Creating the Modern Southwest" (which will close at the end of this year). The former spotlights the impressive personal collection of Wayne and Andrea Rumley -- a widely varied assortment of historical and contemporary artwork, all of it springing from the American West. And the latter show is a visually rich gathering of paintings and works on paper -- most of them from the permanent collection of the Gilcrease -- that documents modernist colors, styles, patterns, themes, and techniques visible in the 20th-century art of the American Southwest.

Rich Fisher passed through KWGS about thirty years ago, and just never left. Today, he is the general manager of Public Radio Tulsa, and the host of KWGS’s public affairs program, StudioTulsa, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in August 2012 . As host of StudioTulsa, Rich has conducted roughly four thousand long-form interviews with local, national, and international figures in the arts, humanities, sciences, and government. Very few interviews have gone smoothly. Despite this, he has been honored for his work by several organizations including the Governor's Arts Award for Media by the State Arts Council, a Harwelden Award from the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, and was named one of the “99 Great Things About Oklahoma” in 2000 by Oklahoma Today magazine.
