Editor's Note: Photo Change on Story Involving TPD Major

Shortly after publication, we made the decision to change the original photo on our story about comments made by Tulsa Police Maj. Travis Yates.

The first photo we used showed Yates at an event with a man who turned out to be Racism Stinks founder and Executive Director Richard Baxter.

Baxter is also a producer for "Focus: Black Oklahoma," a program that airs on KWGS. The news department, unfortunately, has not had the opportunity to meet their team.

Baxter and people who know him reached out to us with concerns a photo of him with someone in the news for statements like systemic bias in policing "just doesn't exist" and asserting that research shows black Americans are shot less frequently than they ought to be would unfairly damage Baxter's reputation and his work fighting racism.

We agreed with their concerns and changed the photo to one of Yates by himself.

To Richard and others, we are sorry for any hurt the original photo has caused.

Matt Trotter joined KWGS as a reporter in 2013. Before coming to Public Radio Tulsa, he was the investigative producer at KJRH. His freelance work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times and on MSNBC and CNN.
