StudioTulsa on Health: Jan Figart and the Community Service Council of Tulsa

Aired on Friday, July 12th.

On this installment of ST on Health, guest host John Schumann speaks with Jan Figart, an Associate Director and Senior Planner in Maternal and Child Health at the Community Service Council (or CSC) of Tulsa. As such, Figart serves CSC by overseeing the development of community collaboratives, staff support for coalitions, program development, grant writing, program evaluation, and analysis of community trends. Figart is also a leader for the Council's work in early childhood, maternal and child health, disabilities, Hispanic services, health care reform, and staff training; she also directs CSC's U.S. Census Information Center, monitors the creation and presentation of its Community Profile and Perfect Storm analyses, and has authored many of CSC reports. (She's worked at CSC since 2000.) But what, you might ask, is CSC? Here's an answer that comes from the Community Service Council of Tulsa's website: "You may not know our name, but you know our work. The Community Service Council provides leadership for planning and mobilizing efforts that improve the lives of thousands of Oklahomans each day. Since 1941, we have been bringing people together to research, plan, coordinate and mobilize action, and assess progress towards addressing some of our most critical social service, health, education and civic challenges. CSC also facilitates early access to help through varied information services. Many people know the Council best for the community issues we address, and our many community initiatives." Schumann explores some of these very issues and initiatives with Figart, particularly as they relate to the health and well-being of the people of our state.
