Brent Venables was a popular choice to step as Oklahoma’s head football coach after Lincoln Riley left for Southern California last December.

Oklahoma assistant head football coach Cale Gundy says he has resigned after using offensive language during a film session.

The 50-year-old was a Sooners assistant for 13 years with Bob Stoops and spent the last 10 years as Clemson’s defensive coordinator. Venables has coached in eight national title games.

The 50-year-old Venables was on Oklahoma’s staff under Bob Stoops as co-defensive coordinator from 1999 to 2003 and defensive coordinator from 2004 to 2011.
