On this edition of ST, we are talking about the life and work of Dorothea Lange (1895-1965), the influential American documentary photographer and photo-journalist who's best known for her Depression-era photographs; her "Migrant Mother" is surely among the most recognized images to emerge from the 1930s. Our guest is Elizabeth Partridge, the goddaughter of Lange and an award-winning author of numerous books. Partridge's newest volume is "Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Lightning." This work begins with an authoritative biographical essay on Lange's career before going on to showcase her entire body of work in more than 100 plates. As a critic for the online arts/literary/cultural journal known as Brain Pickings has noted: "Partridge, an accomplished and prolific author in her own right, presents a first-of-its-kind career-spanning monograph of the legendary photographer's work, placing her most famous and enduring photographs in a biographical context that adds new dimension to these iconic images." Moreover, "Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Lightning" is being published as the companion book to a PBS "American Masters" episode that will air in 2014.
