Summer Reading Suggestions from Nancy Pearl

Aired on Wednesday, August 10th.

On this broadcast of StudioTulsa, we speak with the author, editor, and retired librarian Nancy Pearl, formerly of Tulsa and now based in Seattle, who is also our longtime book reviewer. We called Nancy recently and asked her to offer a few can't-miss summer reading recommendations. Here are the titles that she spoke with us about:

Chris Bachelder, "The Throwback Special"

Margeret Lazarus Dean, "Leaving Orbit: Notes from the Last Days of American Space Flight"

Helen DeWitt, "Last Samurai"

Lissa Evans, "Crooked Heart"

Elly Griffiths, "The Crossing Place"

Michael Gruber, "The Good Son"

Dylan Hicks, "Amateurs"

Stan Jones, "White Sky, Black Ice"

Dominic Smith, "The Last Painting of Sara De Vos"

(Also, please note that we spoke with Nancy about two forthcoming books, both due out in November. One is Michael Chabon's "Moonglow" and the other is the third volume in Blanche Wiesen Cook's biography of Eleanor Roosevelt.)

Rich Fisher passed through KWGS about thirty years ago, and just never left. Today, he is the general manager of Public Radio Tulsa, and the host of KWGS’s public affairs program, StudioTulsa, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in August 2012 . As host of StudioTulsa, Rich has conducted roughly four thousand long-form interviews with local, national, and international figures in the arts, humanities, sciences, and government. Very few interviews have gone smoothly. Despite this, he has been honored for his work by several organizations including the Governor's Arts Award for Media by the State Arts Council, a Harwelden Award from the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, and was named one of the “99 Great Things About Oklahoma” in 2000 by Oklahoma Today magazine.
